Riverside Invests in Australian Simulation Software Company October 03, 2017

Energy Exemplar Serves International Energy Market

The Riverside Company has invested in Energy Exemplar, the developer and marketer of the PLEXOS suite of energy market simulation and modelling software. PLEXOS is the best-in-class integrated simulation software for electric power, water, gas and renewables. It has a global customer base, with greater than 90% of revenues generated outside Australia.

Energy Exemplar has more than 150 customers in 47 countries globally. Based in Australia, with offices around the world, the firm employs 55 staff, including 16 software developers. PLEXOS is an international leader thanks to Energy Exemplar’s sustained R&D investment and thought leadership in energy market simulation.

“Energy Exemplar’s product suite and track record is exceptional, with significant room to expand in a fragmented global market with a number of positive industry trends,” said Riverside Partner Nick Speer. “PLEXOS offers better product features that materially improve the decision-making capability of its sophisticated customers in an environment where complexity is ever-increasing.”

Riverside’s global footprint is a perfect match for Energy Exemplar. Its international resources and experienced operating team will work with Energy Exemplar to continue the company’s international, cross-commodity expansion.

“Energy Exemplar is a growing company and we’re eager to partner with the team to support and accelerate their growth trajectory,” said Riverside Partner Steven Spiteri. “We plan to invest in R&D so management can retain and strengthen its competitive edge while boosting sales and marketing efforts in international high-growth markets.”

Riverside has extensive experience in software investing and looks forward to a strong and successful partnership with Energy Exemplar founder Glenn Drayton. The firm plans to source and integrate complementary add-on acquisitions throughout the hold.

“Riverside’s deep global resources will support Energy Exemplar and PLEXOS in keeping ahead of the curve in a world where simulation and co-optimization of resources across many industries is increasingly important,” said Drayton. “Their industry experience, operating track record and international capabilities will combine to sustain rapid growth for our company.”

Working with Speer and Spiteri on the deal for Riverside were Senior Associate Nicholas Pejnovic and Senior Associate Kevin Xu.

Barings provided debt for the transaction, and Riverside was assisted by Bain & Company (commercial), KPMG (financial), Deloitte (tax), Herbert Smith Freehills (legal) and Pricing Insight.
